Apat sa Taglamig’s Two Best Plays

The two plays are “Our Lady of Arlegui” written by Chris Martinez and “Si Maria Isabella at ang Guryon ng mga Tala” poetically written by Eljay Castro Deldoc

The play of Our Lady of Arlegui was performed at KNCHS AVR (October 6-7 2018)

This play is about a muslim lady named Anisah with a age of 39, selling pirated Cd’s or DVD’s at Arlegui street in Quiapo Manila and a Christian man named Rhett, a 23 years old film geek.

Several literatures illuminating the conflicts and biases between Christians and Muslims have already been written, and Chris Martinez’s “Our Lady of Arlegui” provides a hilarious addition. The one-act Filipino play depicts the short but very memorable encounter between Rhett, a young Christian film geek, and Anisah, a 39 yrs old Muslim vendor of DVDs in Quiapo’s Arlegui Street. Rhett is looking for the classic film, “400 Blows” when an Optical Media Board raid ensues, which highlights the culture of “staged” hiding and creates a rationale for conversation.

Though attempting to debunk the prejudices between Muslims and Christians, the play cannot help positioning itself to the perspective of a Christian writer writing for a Christian audience. The exploration of the topic is so light that the play spends itself in discussing just two points, first, Muslims’ taboo of eating pork, and second, their preference to have multiple partners. While Anisah justifies the existence of these beliefs, she however is not given a voice that conversely highlights Muslims’ biases against Christians, making the discourse almost one-sided, and leaning to “let-us-be kind-and-understand-them” syndrome.

Quiapo’s Dibidi culture to the never ending war between the two religions, locally and globally by interweaving various literary tools and elements. Arlegui Street, a Christian-baptized placed, is a Muslim territory, something that strongly recalls the historical bloody wars of the Crusades, and the Hispanic tradition of Moro-Moro. In closing the play with Anisah and Rhett starting a meaningful friendship and strong suki-relationship.

Chris Martinez’s “Our Lady of Arlegui” points out that mutual religious biases can be negotiated and reconciled in exchange of the common goal to rebel against “legitimate” capitalist establishments that limit the flow of knowledge and cultural exchange.

Apat sa Taglamig Production of Koronadal City was brave and confident enough to perform the 2015 critically-acclaimed original Filipino play – Si Maria Isabella at ang Guryon ng mga Tala poetically written by Eljay Castro Deldoc, one of the most renowned plays in this 2015’s Virgin Labfest,

“Si Maria Isabella at Ang Guryon ng Mga Tala” is a love story and an unflinching journey spanning 60 years in search of materials to build a giant kite. The decades of pilgrimage eventually become a testament and an offering to the cathedral of ardent love, even if unrequited.

Deeper in Theater

The purpose of our blog is to share the beauty and the knowledge behind the theater. As we all know, theater had been a big hit way back before and we would like to share why some people are still making a beauty out of it. We would like to encourage people to get involve in these kind of stuffs, especially our youth, because through theater, people tend to establish their self-esteem and confidence; people tend to explore the beauty of our culture and our history, and most importantly, they’ll get involved in something that is worthy of their time instead of focusing on less worthy things like mobile games and excessive use of social media.

In our region, the City of Koronadal has this community based theater called Apat sa Taglamig Productions Inc. They are well-known for their straight and intimate theater production which portrays the reality or realism. This community based theater wanted to spread education and at the same time, the culture of our community through arts.

We are lucky to have a one day experience what it feels like to be a part of the production of Apat sa Taglamig. On the 26th day of May, we are given a chance to witness and help the preparations that is needed for the play to be done. The play was entitled “Ang mga Biik sa Langit” which is directed by Jim Raborar. It was also the culmination day of their kid’s workshop.

During the preparations, you can see the teamwork and the friendship that you could build with the people that welcomes you wholeheartedly. Also, you can see the excitement on the children’s eyes and their eagerness to showcase their talent on stage.

This kind of community or group is what we needed in our society. We can learn a lot of things from them like our culture, history, and education through arts. They can also help us build friendships and build our own selves by helping us build own self confidence and our self esteem. Instead of wasting our time on the other things life might offer us, why not invest our time and effort on the things that may matter later in life. Like, theater arts.
